Your Mind's Eye

This weeks task was to 'exercise our mind's eye', and to do this we had to choose from a few different topics and photograph what it means visually. It required us to look at the topic more in depth, and see what further themes are conjured up when we think of that particular word, and how we could photograph something that reflects it. We had to consider, what are the most relevant visual features to express that word and why. I chose the word 'Tranquility'. By definition, this means the quality or state of being calm. When I then thought about what makes me calm, I decided to shoot some images of nature that included water. Water is often seen as being tranquil, and often many people like myself find being out in nature very calming and relaxing. So this is what i tried to get across in the image, and after taking a few it was decided that the following image best suited this topic.

The second task we had to complete was in Abstracting and Selecting. We had to line up a few objects on a table, and photograph the qualities of them that reflected a particular theme. We had to look at the lines, patterns, shapes and colours, to see what elements reflected that theme. From the objects that I had chosen, I took my images around the theme of 'soft', as one of my objects was a cushion, and another happened to be my cat that was sitting there at the time. The following images best reflected my theme.

Hey guys, I am creating this blog as a way to showcase some of my photography work, old and new. I often post on my personal photography Instagram page, but felt this would be a new way to show off my work, and interact with the people viewing it. I'd love feedback and comments, and will take on board anything that worked well and anything that didn't. I thought the first thing I should upload is recent street photography work I shot whilst in New York over the summer. I love doing street photography, and often tell people this is my main genre. I have always loved people watching, and capturing people in a natural and un-staged moment.

Food Photography

Last week, we had chance to experiment with food photography. It was interesting to learn about the best way to light the food that you are photographing, and to see how you can play about and make it look more creative. The first image I took was of these crisps. The colours gave the image depth and injected a bit of creative colour, as well as making them more interesting to photograph. The use of the mesh underneath also helped to give the image more depth, and gave the image a more natural and raw look, which complemented the food perfectly. The second image I shot was of bread. This image had more depth by having the different condiments in the background. The spreads helped to aid the image and make the bread look more interesting. I shot this image a bit differently, and got in closer with a more shallow depth of field to put the focus on the bread at the front with the slight bit of spread on. I think this made the image look more effective, and we then therefore focus on ...
